Mount Longido

Mount Longido is a less-visited but rewarding hiking destination in northern Tanzania, near the Kenya border, about 80 km from Arusha. The hike takes you through Maasai lands, lush forests, and rocky trails to a peak at 2,629 meters (8,625 feet), offering panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and the surrounding savanna.

Hike Overview

  • Distance: ~15 km round trip
  • Duration: 6–8 hours (depending on pace and weather)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • Elevation Gain: ~1,500m

Hiking Route

  1. Start at Longido Village
    • The trek begins at Longido town, where you pass through Maasai settlements.
    • You may see giraffes, antelopes, and zebras in the lower plains.
  2. Dense Forest Zone
    • The trail enters a lush, montane forest with thick vegetation and birdlife.
    • Expect some steep sections with tangled roots and rocks.
  3. Rocky Climb to the Summit
    • The final stretch is steeper and requires scrambling over rocks.
    • The summit rewards you with breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro, Meru, and the Maasai plains.
  4. Descent to Longido Village
    • Takes about 3–4 hours back.

Best Time to Hike

  • Dry Season (June to October & January to February): Best for clear views and easier trails.
  • Rainy Season (March to May & November to December): Trails can be slippery, but the forest is lush and vibrant.

What to Bring

  • Hiking boots with good grip
  • Plenty of water (at least 2 liters)
  • Snacks & packed lunch
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
  • Light rain jacket (if hiking in the rainy season)
  • Walking stick (optional but helpful)
